THE WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS FROM THE NICOLSON INSTITUTE

BUSINESS AT THE DISTILLERY

Senior pupils from Mrs Beattie’s Higher Business Management course recently visited Isle of Harris Distillers Ltd. Mr K Maclean, Head of Spirit Production, gave them a tour of the distillery and Mr S Erlanger, Managing Director, delivered a presentation about the marketing of Isle of Harris Gin.  The visit was a great opportunity for pupils to link the theory covered in the Higher course with a real-life, successful business context.  Pictured are the pupils with Mr Erlanger at the distillery.

TÙRAS GU AN LANNTAIR

Air Diardaoin an 5th latha den Damhair,  chaidh leth-cheud againn bho S3 agus S4 sios gu An Lanntair airson dealbh cluich fhaicinn. Chaidh an dealbh-chluich ainmeil,  “ Aisling Oidhche Meadhan Samhraidh “a chaidh a sgrìobhadh le Uilleam Shakespeare, a chur dhan Ghàidhlig le Daibhidh Walker. Cuideachd, chluich Daibhidh a  h-uile pearsa san dealbh chluich. Bha e gu math èibhinn agus rinn Daibhidh deagh obair air an sgeulachd seo. Chòrd an dealbh chluich rinn gu mòr agus bha feadhainn againn air a dhèanamh ann am Beurla agus bha e na b’fhasa a thuigsinn mar sin.

On Thursday 5 October, a group of 50 Gaelic S4 and S3 pupils visited An Lanntair to see a Gaelic version of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The play was translated by David Walker and all parts were played by this talented actor. Pupils enjoyed the show and had their photograph taken onstage afterwards with David Walker.

SUPPORT FOR LEARNING ASSISTANTS

Pictured are some of the school’s 22 full- and part-time Support for Learning (SfL) Assistants. They work alongside SfL teachers and subject teachers to support young people with a wide range of additional support needs, and also provide additional support during assessments and exams.  The aim of all the assistants is to help meet the individual educational needs of young people, allowing them to fully access education and to encourage independence.

THE GENERATION GAME

Recently we have had a very unusual situation in The Nicolson Institute, with three generations of a family in the school at the same time. Perhaps this may even be a first? We would be delighted to hear from local historians if there has been a similar situation in the past. Pictured are Mrs L Minion of the Biology Department, her daughter Sarah Hart (S3), and Mrs Minion's father, Mr R Innes, who is currently one of our much-valued supply teachers.
